Case Study – Interior Design Project in Manchester

An exciting city centre commercial project provided lots of challenges and a great scope for design ideas;  The Shanghai Clinic on Portland Street, Manchester required a complete transformation to set it apart from its competitors.  Owner, professor Shulan Tang, wanted to provide her patients with Traditional Chinese Medicines and treatments within a sleek and contemporary environment.

“Professor Shulan Tang and her clients required a clean-looking, contemporary interior which provided lots of clever storage and practical working space for mixing herbs for individual patients, and serving customers.  A welcoming and bright interior was essential to help increase the illusion of space in this modest sized shop.  My clients also wanted a more relaxed seating area for patients waiting for acupuncture or massage treatments”. – Hannah

The colour scheme was fresh and bright with lots of shades of whites, with a strong accent of deep red picked out in the soft furnishes and lighting.  The client was clear that she didn’t want a typically Chinese design, but wanted to incorporate a modern, western style with just a hint of Chinese styling.  This was introduced in small details such as the cushions and artwork.  A bespoke curved counter with ultra-hygienic solid acrylic work surface, was designed and created to help make the most of the space, and provide enough worktop area for the staff to mix herbs and serve patients.

Clever storage was an essential part of the brief, and the counter features lots of hidden storage, as well as sliding glass doors for display items.  The far corner boasts floor-to-ceiling storage for traditional Chinese herbs and ingredients and there’s even some hidden storage inside the bespoke upholstered bench-seating.

The lighting scheme for this space was so important, as the room is actually very dark with little natural light coming in from the one window.  Hannah combined ceiling spotlights, with feature pendant lanterns and plinth lights in the counter for an interesting lighting scheme full of different levels.

The completed room now feels brighter and bigger, much more modern and sleek.  It certainly differentiates itself from other Chinese herb clinics in Manchester which are usually always traditional and dimly lit.  Please visit The Shanghai Clinic for more information on treatments and medicines and to experience their brand new contemporary interior.
