John, The Soft Furnisher

John Downey works with his wife, Ann, to provide customers with tailor-made furnishing fabrics. The couple produce bespoke curtains, blinds and upholstery so that each home is unique.

John went to work in weaving mills at the age of 16, dealing with hundred thousand metres of fine fabrics. There he developed his knowledge of their various textures and suitability for different uses.

He moved into the retail sector in his mid-20s and today he advises customers on style, pattern, texture and colour to suit their home.

Ann has a Design Diploma with the National Design Company and has trained as a curtain and blind maker.

The couple, based in Stockport, have half a century of textile experience behind them to create individual, made-to-measure designs.

John said: “We pride ourselves on great customer service, in which we offer the personal touch. Some customers know exactly what they want and we ensure we meet their specifications.

“Others are looking for guidance and we use our experience to advise them on how to put colours and textures together.  We help them develop their ideas so they are happy with the outcome.

“Custom-made furnishings look great and there is no risk your neighbours will have the same. I love it when customers see the end result and say ‘wow!’”

The father-of-two enjoys walking his border terrier, Jasper, in his free time.
