William Morris in a Georgian Home
Having worked with these lovely homeowners previously, redesigning their bedroom spaces, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to completely transform the ground floor of this charming Georgian terrace in Manchester.
The biggest and most impactful change was flipping the usage of their dining and sitting room, to create a cosier snug and larger Library-esque space to entertain. One step further was to open up the diving wall with a classic arch, to connect these two spaces and allow the design features, light and colour palette flow between them.
I combined soft sage greens with warm woods, marble tiles and beaded walls to create a classic interior full of charm and character. The client’s own book collection and artwork, including the fantastic tapestry really evokes a sense of times gone by and the florals featuring in the curtains, blinds and cushions are based on a traditional William Morris style which really reflects the client’s taste.
Keen eyes will note the repetition of herringbone details both in the fireplace tiles around the log burner, to the bench upholstery, which adds a touch of modernity keeping the scheme fresh and interesting. (scroll to bottom of page for before pictures)
The design for the kitchen required as much impact as the entertaining spaces, and continuing the love of green, we opted for a bold forest green shaker style with antique brass handles and other classic features.
Including, a beautiful brass swan neck tap over the Butler sink, brass wall lights to highlight this area and a classic open range cooker aperture to create the ultimate cooking zone. One of my favourite aspects is the pantry which allows the client to hide away all her dried goods and spices, but also illuminates the interior when the doors open.
All is completed with a stunning quartz with a golden vein running throughout, and the lack the busy tiles helps the design to look flawless and timeless.
This new kitchen design is a far cry from the disjointed and heavily outdated kitchen they once had. (scroll to bottom of page for before pictures)
I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this outdated bathroom and with a complete new layout, brass fittings, bespoke vanity and mint glazed tiles, the new bathroom feels like stepping back in time.
My absolute favourite addition to this room is the textured rust wallpaper as it so perfectly contrasts the lightness of the tiles and sets the brass lighting off beautifully… it even wraps onto the ceiling to completely cocoon the space with warmth.
Another major win is the flooring – these striking star designed tiles add an unexpected twist to a classic bathroom which my client loved.
Finally, the ground floor powder room, previously a forgotten space, has been brought back to life with William-Morris style wallpaper and an aged oak effect beam to add rustic glamour to this perfect little nook.
